Article: What to Look for When Buying Resort Wear on Clearance

What to Look for When Buying Resort Wear on Clearance

Clearance is the right place to buy resort wear if you know what you're looking for. It's the wrong place if you don't — you can't return final-sale items, and a 70%-off price tag isn't a reason to buy something that won't actually fit your trip.

This is the framework we'd give a friend before they shopped our own clearance. Read it once and you'll get more out of every sale you ever shop.

Why brands mark down (the honest version)

Resort wear lives on a tight seasonal calendar. Pieces that were photographed for our spring lookbook in February are no longer the focus by July, even if they're still beautiful. Markdowns aren't a sign of poor quality — they're a sign of the next collection coming. Every piece in our current Clearance Event was a full-price item from a past season.

Knowing this changes how you shop. Stop looking for what's wrong with a discounted piece and start looking for whether it fits you and your life.

Quality green flags to look for

  • Named fabric content. Look for specific fibers — Rayon, Cotton, Viscose, Polyester — not generic phrases. Specific is honest. Vague is suspicious. Our clearance products list the actual fiber composition on each PDP.
  • Real review count. A clearance item with a 5-star average across multiple reviews is a stronger signal than a heavily discounted piece with zero reviews. Five-star clearance picks worth looking at: the Aztec Abstract Caftan, Royal Jungle Print Long Kaftan, and Animal Print Resort Caftan.
  • Detailed product photos. A clearance item with on-body shots from multiple angles is more trustworthy than one with a single studio image.
  • A specific original price. “Was $108, now $34” is a real markdown. “Compare at $999” often isn't. Our compare-at prices reflect the original retail.

How to size when you can't return

Final sale is the biggest constraint on clearance shopping. A few rules that work:

  • One-size pieces are forgiving. Many of our caftans and maxi dresses are designed with generous one-size cuts that fit a wide range. The Beach Pool Party Maxi and Positano Maxi Caftan are good examples — both fit US 4–12 comfortably.
  • S/M and L/XL are also forgiving. Pieces with two-size variants (rather than precise S/M/L/XL) are easier to size correctly because there's overlap built in.
  • Skip pieces with structured fit. If a piece needs to hit your waist or hug your hips exactly to look right, save it for full-price (returnable) shopping. Loose, flowy, drapey — those are clearance-safe.
  • Check the fabric. Stretch fabrics (with spandex or elastane) accommodate variance better than woven cottons or linens.

The fastest-moving pieces

The 5–10 best items in any clearance event sell through in the first 48 hours after they're surfaced. After that, what's left is what's left. If you see something you love at a clearance price, the right move is usually to buy it that day.

The pieces with fewer than 5 units remaining live in our Last Pieces collection. We update it dynamically as inventory moves. If you wait, those go first.

Stack the savings

Across most resort-wear brands, the deepest discount on a single piece tops out around 70% off. Where clearance gets really good is when you can stack discounts — we offer an automatic extra 10% off when you buy two or more clearance items, applied at checkout. Combined with our base 50–75% markdowns, that's how customers walk away with effective savings closer to 80% on a multi-piece order.

When to shop clearance (and when not to)

Shop clearance for: beach cover-ups, kaftans, maxi dresses, swim cover-ups, vacation tops, evening throws — pieces where flowy fit and statement print are the whole point.

Save full-price for: structured swimwear, fitted dresses, anything you need a specific size for, pieces you'd want to wear all year round rather than for a specific trip.

Frequently asked questions

How often does Club Moda mark down items?

We add new clearance markdowns weekly as past-season inventory clears. Bookmark the main Clearance Event or follow @clubmodausa for the drops.

What's the biggest discount in your current clearance?

The deepest current markdown is on the Necklace Halter Neck Dress at 78% off — down from $198 to $44. That's typical of where our clearance reaches at the floor.

Can I return clearance items if they don't fit?

No. Every item in our clearance event is final sale — no returns, exchanges, or refunds. Please review the size and fit guidance on each product page before ordering.

Do you ever restock clearance items?

Once a clearance item sells out, it doesn't come back. That's the difference between markdowns and a permanent sale category — we're moving past-season stock, not running a continuous discount on current pieces.
